We need to find real solutions for homelessness. This does not mean spending millions on building apartments to house homeless. It does not mean a neighborhood of tiny houses. To truly address homelessness we need to look at the root of the problem. Many of today’s homeless population are there due to mental illness and or drug or alcohol addiction. Many of them do not want to adhere to rules in shelters. We need shelters as a place to get them temporarily off the street, but until we address the mental illness and addiction issue, we are just putting a bandaid on it.
Unfortunately, that may mean forcing them into facilities to help deal with their addictions or mental illness. We also need to have programs to help those that want help such as job training and transitional housing. Homelessness is not an issue that is going away anytime soon.
